AI PRACTITIONER PROJECTS

In our 178 hr Aquatic Integration Certification Program students are asked during their second year of training to complete a project. An Independent Project is a 10+ hr project put together by one or more AI students. The project can consist of a case study, service project or develop a Continuing Education course for AI practitioners. Each student sends their rough draft/idea to the AI Council for acceptance and is assigned a mentor to work with during their project. Students are asked to share their finished projects with each other and the public so everyone can benefit. This is completely optional. This page is to honor the hard work, dedication and commitment to share and extend knowledge in the service of Aquatic Therapy.

'Water of Life” is Danielle Krywko's AI practitioner project. This beautiful presentation of the correlation between Aquatic Integration(AI) moves and Yoga Postures shares Danielle’s deep passion for both these therapeutic arts. In this visual presentation of Danielle working with clients you can see the deep stretches achieved. On land in Yoga we use gravity to help support our weight, our balance. In water utilizing AI we use the water (non gravity), our holds and our intuition to stretch, rock and move physical, emotional and stress from the body.

Danielle is a Certified Massage Therapist with her own practice and an Instructor of massage at California Holistic Institute. She is also a Certified Yoga Instructor, she continues to teach and has owned her own yoga studio. Danielle has always had a love for water and all types of movement. She has a great appreciation for the outdoors and that is usually where you will find her engaged in many varieties of activities when she is not helping others to find their own path to healing.

Some studies have shown little advantages of aquatic over land-based exercise in improving balance, although a small study found decreased postural sway in arthritic women and other small studies found improved balance in elders. Interestingly, a randomized controlled trial of 50 elderly women found a 10 week program of aquatic exercise improved balance but did not decrease the fear of falling.

Since it is plausible the chronically unsteady have associated fascial stiffening, it is proposed that future research examine silk-reeling (a Taiji Quan exercise) in the aquatic rehabilitation of fascia.

Background: Silk-reeling provides a stable framework for aquatic treatment. A smooth flow of momentum likely improves the signal-to-noise ratio. Buoyancy and drag are forces with predictable properties and novel sensations. Like gravity, they may be used by the nervous system to organize motor control.

Lower back pain is one of the most common and chronic ailments that affect people today. There are many causes and treatments available. The most effective way of treating is determining what the root cause is first then deciding on a course of action. An integrative look will combine Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory with the benefits of Aquatic Integration (AI) treatment. Background: According to TCM, when qi and blood flow freely there is no pain. Therefore, pain in any area of the body is due to the non-free-flow of qi and/or blood. For pain-free living, longevity and optimum health, it is essential to keep the qi and blood full and moving.

The following case study is with my client who has been diagnosed with Myofascial Pain Syndrome. My hope is that this information will give insight and understanding to this condition and how Aquatic Integration can be helpful in relieving the pain associated with it. Background: Myofascial Pain Syndrome is a chronic condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles). It may involve either a single muscle or a muscle group. In some cases, the area where a person experiences the pain may not be where the myofascial pain generator is located. Experts believe that the actual site of the injury or the strain prompts the development of a trigger point that, in turn, causes pain in other areas. This situation is known as referred pain

Orientation: Utilizing Aquatic Integration™ (AI) and my background in psychology, ecopsychology, expressive arts therapy, and massage, I explored what has been traditionally known to all ages and cultures as Underworld Descents: initiatory experiences in ones life when darkness calls and offers its Wisdom. Such a descent reflects what Joseph Campbell has described as the “Hero’s Journey” – an initiatory ordeal that is inherent to the very nature of human development reflected in stories and myths throughout time and place. My Case Study became this type of reflection as well. It takes place in present-time with one client but in the writing it reads as story for I chose archetypal patterns as names to protect the privacy of my client. The AI community will glean the insights learned at a deep level as they drop into the awareness that myth carries the threads of truth inherent to human nature. Enjoy!

Hypothesis: AI helps bring the body into balance by decreasing the pulse intensity of an imbalance—particularly relaxing the nervous system circuitry and expediting the healing of affected deep tissues. Basically, AI reconnects the mind and body. Background: The ancient form of Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis determines what imbalances are affecting the body and creating discomfort.
